ABOUT US
PNU-KATALONAN is the pioneer and duly recognized LGBTQIA+ organization in the Philippine Normal University, created for the LGBTQIA+ youth of Philippine Normal University. The origin of the organization’s name dates back to the pre-colonial era of the Philippines. During that time, there were no doctors or priests that our ancestors could turn to when things go wrong. These roles were assumed by spirit mediums that can directly communicate with the Gods, called "Babaylan" in the Visayan Islands and "Katalonan'' (kutulunan) in the Katagalugan and use their “powers” to heal sickness. More often than not, these mediums are women, but there are records by the Spanish colonizers of the existence of men assuming the medium's roles, implied further that they were men who are impotent and had been living more like a woman than a man.
Being an organization focusing on representing the LGBTQIA+ community, we believe that taking the name KATALONAN to be the organization's name meant recognizing the long existence of LGBT history and identity in our society.
MISSION AND VISION
The Mission
The mission of KATALONAN is to improve the lives of all its members by identifying individuals who will fight for inclusivity, diversity, and fairness, and who place the needs of the community as a priority. Our organization aims to work towards being an organization that is responsive to the needs of all, and to ensure that the LGBTQIA+ community and other traditionally marginalized communities are able to live safely, with dignity and equality, to the fullest extent possible. KATALONAN works to empower the community by providing an open forum for debate and education in every issue concerning the community.
The Vision
The vision of KATALONAN is dedicated to its advocacy of being a champion of human rights, social and economic justice, and equality for all persons, foremost the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (herein referred to as LGBTQIA+) community. KATALONAN strives to ensure that all persons are valued and represented, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC).
Why was the PNU Katalonan founded?
1. Due to the obvious absence of an entity that provides a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and the community’s misrepresentation inside the University.
2. A chosen family that will guide the LGBTQIA+ students and allies to come to terms with who they are and how it affects their future.
3. To educate the public on the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community inside and outside of the university.
